Description
This musical theater production is designed for young audiences aged 10 to 14 and explores themes such as remigration, nostalgia, intangible cultural heritage, family bonds, and the changing spirit of community that has been evolving in our society for decades. The play is based on true stories from the childhood of author Loekie Morales. In her collection Rumannan Purunchi – Saga of a Tropical Nest – she shares the family heritage of the Moral siblings.
Milushka Birge, playwright and director of the piece, drew inspiration from this heritage to create a new story that speaks to young people about community spirit, strength, helplessness, and more. The story is told through the perspective of a fictional character, Natasha, who lives in the Netherlands and travels to Curaçao. She is the daughter of one of the Moral sisters. In Curaçao, Natasha is confronted with a wave of economic development that threatens to deeply impact her family’s heritage. She urges everyone to return home to protect what belongs to them. “Hurry, we don’t have time to lose.”
Will the Purunchi siblings listen to Natasha? Will they pack their bags and return?
With an extensive background in theater on Curaçao, Birge wrote and directed this piece. She is also well known in local schools for her earlier works Mancha di Zeta (a puppet theater) and Aminata, which explores the theme of emancipation. In Rumannan Purunchi, Milushka Birge demonstrates her skill by guiding actors through a variety of roles and giving them the space to showcase their range of talents. Both seasoned performers and younger talents shine in this production. Together with musician, composer, and artist Eric Calmes, they have created new pieces to delight the eyes, ears, and hearts of children, teens, and adults alike.

Muziektheaterstuk ‘Rumannan Purunchi’ in première
Op zaterdag 16 september 2023 gaat het Papiamiamentstalige muziektheaterstuk ‘Rumannan Purunchi’ in de Aula van Habaai in première. Voor het eerst brengt Teatro KadaKen een stuk dat speciaal is gemaakt voor grotere kinderen en jongeren, ongeveer in de categorie van 10-14 jaar. Het is een echte familieproductie geworden. Door het aansprekende thema en de hoge kwaliteit van het spel en de muziek is het een feest voor alle generaties.
