‘Chakutoe’

Description

Chakutoe is a socially engaged theater production that shines a light on a lesser-known chapter of Curaçao’s history. The play uses the 1922 harbor strike led by Felix Chakutoe as a starting point to explore universal themes within a historical, social, and cultural context.

Audiences are transported to Curaçao in 1922, a time when the island’s harbor was booming. The ruling class focused heavily on continued economic growth, largely by protecting the interests of shipping companies. But when those companies drastically reduced dockworkers’ wages, tensions exploded.

The story is told through the lens of the Hendriksen-Schilder family. Their son Tirso dreams of becoming a leader. Inspired by Jesus and Tula, he loves reading and praying but struggles to find his own path. When his sister Magdalena steps forward and proves herself to be a true leader, Tirso is faced with a dilemma: conform to society’s expectations, or follow his inner voice?

The play was written and directed by Gibi Bacilio, a veteran of Curaçaoan theater with decades of experience. In Chakutoe, Bacilio showcases his full strength by having the cast play multiple roles, allowing their diverse talents to truly shine. This approach highlights the depth of seasoned performers like Norma Cova and Albert Schoobaar, while also providing space for promising new talents like Tisjaira Martina, Guenn Ramon Gustina, and Roley Kelkboom.
