After a hugely successful run on Curaçao in 2023 and 2024, Teatro KadaKen is bringing the heartwarming and musical performance Rumannan Purunchi to the Netherlands in 2025. This moving and captivating play, inspired by true stories from the younger years of author Loekie Morales, tells a tale of family ties, memories, and the search for home, with humor and tenderness.
About the Story
The story unfolds in Wela’s (Grandma’s) house and tells the tale of a family history that spans two eras: the 60s/70s and the present day. When the family home in Curaçao is about to be sold, emotions flare among adult siblings who now live in the Netherlands. Granddaughter Natasha takes it upon herself to reunite the family and save the house—a struggle where love, nostalgia, and social change intersect.
Music, Culture, and Humor
Rumannan Purunchi is bursting with music, color, and energy. Expressive performances, vibrant music, and a dynamic set design take the audience on a journey from Curaçao then to the Netherlands now. Through a rich blend of humor and emotion, current issues like the housing shortage, migration, and gentrification are explored in ways that feel both familiar and accessible. Though performed in Papiamentu, the production speaks to a wide audience through strong visual storytelling and clear descriptive scenes.

Teatro Kadaken
Teatro KadaKen, opgericht in 2008 door actrice Norma Cova en theatermaker/acteur Albert Schoobaar, maakt maatschappelijk betrokken theater van hoge artistieke kwaliteit voor jong en oud. Onder de zakelijke leiding van Maryluska Nisbet en met het bestuur als eindverantwoordelijke, ontwikkelt het gezelschap voorstellingen die actuele en urgente thema’s in de Curaçaose samenleving belichten. Vanuit de overtuiging dat theater een krachtig middel is om moeilijke onderwerpen bespreekbaar te maken, gaat KadaKen actief de dialoog aan met het publiek. Recente producties zijn de muzikale theatervoorstelling Piar: e último bataya (Piar: het laatste gevecht), die in oktober 2025 in première gaat, en de reprise van Rumannan Purunchi, die in diezelfde maand in verschillende theaters in Nederland te zien zal zijn.
De naam ‘KadaKen’ is in het Papiaments vergelijkbaar met het oudhollandse Elckerlyck – alleman. Dit staat symbool voor de kernwaarden van het gezelschap: inclusie en representatie. In een samenleving die door migratiegeschiedenis en koloniale erfenis wordt gekenmerkt door grote diversiteit én patronen van uitsluiting, wil Teatro KadaKen verhalen brengen waarin iedereen zich kan herkennen. Naast eigen producties voor brede publieksgroepen biedt het gezelschap educatieve programma’s voor scholen en brengt het sinds 2009 een reeks spraakmakende voorstellingen op Curaçao, met uitstapjes naar Aruba en incidenteel Nederland. Zo heeft Teatro KadaKen zich stevig verankerd in het culturele veld en blijft het bijdragen aan bewustwording en verandering.

Muziektheaterstuk ‘Rumannan Purunchi’ in première
Op zaterdag 16 september 2023 gaat het Papiamiamentstalige muziektheaterstuk ‘Rumannan Purunchi’ in de Aula van Habaai in première. Voor het eerst brengt Teatro KadaKen een stuk dat speciaal is gemaakt voor grotere kinderen en jongeren, ongeveer in de categorie van 10-14 jaar. Het is een echte familieproductie geworden. Door het aansprekende thema en de hoge kwaliteit van het spel en de muziek is het een feest voor alle generaties.
