Teatro KadaKen\u2019s home base is Teatro Aula in Wishi. The space was built in 1930 inside the Huize Welgelegen building, known as Habaai. Back then, this enormous 19th-century structure was still a boarding school for wealthy girls from the region. <\/p>\n
From 1864, the Sisters of Roosendaal ruled here. Just imagine all those privileged children spending decades in this \u2018hall for expression\u2019, dancing, singing, and perhaps even performing theater. But without an audience. Daughters of parents willing to pay extra took piano lessons or practiced playing string instruments. <\/p>\n
All the girls received lessons in Castilian, French, English, Italian, and German, as well as calligraphy, declamation, literature, math, natural sciences, and biblical and church history. Because here at the boarding school, the sisters naturally also focused on the girls\u2019 religious education and the cultivation of \u2018virtues of the heart\u2019. <\/p>\n
In the early decades of the 20th century, ‘Colegio del Sagrado Coraz\u00f3n’, the Sacred Heart College, was held in high esteem. The building on the former Welgelegen plantation was in excellent condition, with spacious, well-ventilated and clean classrooms and dormitories, bathrooms with fresh water, and a patio. Outside, there was a tennis court. In 1930, the boarding school added a new wing with four classrooms, an auditorium, and a kitchen for the domestic science program, which was very modern for its time. Above the auditorium, a large dormitory was built, with beds separated by oak-paneled walls. In such a chambrette, you had just a little bit more privacy. <\/p>\n
Since 1943, the former boarding school has served as a care home called ‘Huize Welgelegen’. For many years, the auditorium continued to host performances by schoolchildren and adults alike, including jazz musician Angel Salsbach and Edgar Palm, known for their Cura\u00e7aoan compositions, both now deceased. Today, Teatro Aula, located within the care home, has once again become a vibrant center for art, theater, and culture. Isn\u2019t it amazing how young and old now come together under one roof? <\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope the building will officially be designated a protected monument this year, allowing access to heritage funds for restoration,\u201d said expert Michael Newton in the Antilliaans Dagblad on November 26, 2021. This was at the official opening of Teatro Aula. It took a little longer, but in 2022, Huize Welgelegen did in fact receive the protected monument status. <\/p>\n
Back in 2021, Newton also suggested restoring the auditorium to its \u2018former glory\u2019. First, a significant investment was needed in sound and lighting installations, which is essential for a proper theater venue. And that was only the beginning. It helps when people who feel connected to the development of performing arts chip in. These are our advocates, our allies. People like Etienne Pieters and Tania Kross. <\/p>\n
Together, took the first steps. In 2022 and 2023, we joined forces during the volunteer initiative Cura Doet, working alongside company employees, friends, and artists to refurbish the monumental hall. Teatro Aula is fully outfitted as a theater by 2025. It\u2019s our baby, and we take great care of it. <\/p>\n
At Teatro KadaKen, we believe in taking action. So we initiated a renovation plan aligned with monument preservation standards. The plan, developed in 2024 by Jurgenys Lichtenberg, a student at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cura\u00e7ao, was ready. We\u2019re moving forward. We\u2019re renovating. We\u2019re preserving what\u2019s beautiful and valuable, and adding what\u2019s modern and essential for a professional theater experience. It\u2019s happening. This is the center of the performing arts in Cura\u00e7ao. And everyone should know: it\u2019s all happening right here, at Teatro Aula! <\/p>\n

Etienne was the in-house technician at Teatro Aula. Together with Lou Nisbet, he envisioned the theater\u2019s technical infrastructure and advised on what equipment was needed and how much it would cost. The detailed plan and sketches of the system became a key resource for Tania Kross in acquiring the necessary equipment. <\/p>\n

Cura\u00e7aoan opera singer Tania Kross immediately saw the potential of Teatro Aula. The historic hall has superb natural acoustics, which is ideal for opera performances. Tania became a powerful advocate for a new national theater in Cura\u00e7ao. In 2023, she won the Dutch Johannes Vermeer Award, a prestigious prize for artists within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The jury praised her groundbreaking international career and her efforts to make opera accessible to a broad audience while building bridges across diverse communities. Tanya received 100,000 euros to invest in a cultural project of her choice. A portion of the prize went to improving the technical installations of Teatro Aula Habaai. In November 2024, she performed her first production there: Waya-ki Waya-kas, a fundraising event for the Nos Teatro K\u00f2rsou Foundation. <\/p>\n

De thuisbasis van Teatro KadaKen is Teatro Aula in Wishi. De ruimte is in 1930 gebouwd in het pand van Huize Welgelegen, bekend als Habaai. Dan is het enorme gebouw uit de negentiende eeuw nog een kostschool voor welgestelde meisjes uit de regio.<\/p>
Hier voeren sinds 1864 de Zusters van Roosendaal de scepter. Stel je eens voor. Al die rijkeluiskinderen die hier in deze \u2018zaal voor expressie\u2019 decennialang dansen en zingen en misschien wel toneel spelen. Maar dan zonder publiek. Dochters van ouders die daar extra voor willen betalen, leren piano spelen of oefenen op een snaarinstrument.<\/p>
Alle meisjes volgen lessen Castiliaans, Frans, Engels, Italiaans en Duits, maar ook kalligrafie, declameren, literatuur, wiskunde, natuurwetenschappen \u00e9n geschiedenis van de bijbel en de kerk. Want hier in het internaat werken de zusters vanzelfsprekend ook aan de religieuze vorming van de jongedames en aan de ontwikkeling van de \u2018deugden van het hart\u2019.<\/p>
In die eerste decennia van de twintigste eeuw staat het \u2018Colegio del Sagrado Coraz\u00f3n\u2019, het Heilig Hart College, goed aangeschreven. Het gebouw op de voormalige plantage Welgelegen is in goede staat met ruime, goed geventileerde, schone klaslokalen en slaapzalen, badkamers met zoetwater en een patio. Buiten is een tennisbaan. In 1930 krijgt het pensionaat een nieuwe vleugel met vier klaslokalen, een aula en een keuken voor de huishoudschool. Heel modern voor die tijd. Boven de aula komt een grote slaapzaal met bedden met houten wanden van eikenhout. In zo\u2019n chambrette had je net wat meer privacy.<\/p>
De voormalige kostschool is sinds 1943 een verzorgingstehuis met de naam Huize Welgelegen. De aula blijft nog lang de plek waar kinderen van scholen optreden en volwassenen, zoals jazzmuzikant Angel Salsbach en Edgar Palm, bekend van Cura\u00e7aose composities. Beide muzikanten zijn overleden. Nu is Teatro Aula, daar in het verzorgingstehuis, opnieuw een centrum voor kunst, theater en cultuur. \u201cWe hopen dat het gebouw dit jaar nog definitief als een beschermd monument wordt aangemerkt, zodat er ook gebruik gemaakt kan worden van fondsen van het Monumentenfonds om het pand te kunnen restaureren\u201d, citeert het Antilliaans Dagblad deskundige Michael Newton in de editie van 26 november 2021. Newton zegt dit bij de offici\u00eble opening van Teatro Aula. Het duurt iets langer, maar in 2022 krijgt Huize Welgelegen inderdaad de status van beschermd monument.<\/p>
Newton stelt in 2021 ook voor om de aula \u2018in haar oude glorie te herstellen\u2019. Allereerst is een flinke investering nodig in installaties voor geluid en licht. Dat is essentieel voor een theaterzaal. En dat is nog maar het begin. Dan helpt het als mensen die zich verbonden voelen met de ontwikkeling van podiumkunsten een steentje bijdragen. Dit zijn onze pleitbezorgers, onze bondgenoten.
