Vormen van theater maken<\/h3>\n

Het stuk \u2018E h\u00f2mber ku a bira un kach\u00f3\u2019 heeft twee bijzondere vormen van theatermaken, namelijk de vorm van straattheater en qua inhoud het absurdisme als genre. Straattoneel kwam in de jaren \u201880 voor op Cura\u00e7ao. Gibi Basilio (theatermaker, schrijver en docent drama) maakte o.a. straattheater voorstellingen. Helaas werd zijn theatergroep Foro verboden om het theaterstuk \u2018Bo ta bai vota?\u2019 te spelen op straat. Om de achtergrond en ontwikkeling van deze vorm van theatermaken te begrijpen volgt hier onder enige informatie. <\/p>\n

Straattoneel<\/h3>\n

Vermoedelijk is straattoneel de oudste vorm van theatermaken. Het gaat terug naar het 14de-eeuwse\/ middeleeuwse wagenspel. In die tijd werd vermaak gebracht door middel van mimespelers en jongleurs, vari\u00e9t\u00e9theaters, muziektheater. Straat-optreden is een fenomeen dat zich wereldwijd heeft verspreid. Soms vind je talentvolle musici of beeldende acts op festivals. In veel grote steden vind je straattheaterfestivals of pleinen speciaal afgebakend waar straatacts plaatsvinden. Straattheater stelt mensen in staat die misschien nooit naar traditioneel theater zijn gegaan toch van theater te genieten. Het straattheaterpubliek bestaat uit iedereen die wil kijken en de meeste optredens zijn gratis, of achteraf gaat een van de acteurs met de pet rond langs de toeschouwers. Beroemd zijn de artiesten die hun carri\u00e8re als straattheaterartiesten zijn begonnen, zoals Robin Williams, David Bowie, Jewel en Harry Anderson. In Peru werd interactief straattheater gebruikt om het bewustzijn te vergroten over de vele misvattingen van de gezinsplanning en het gebruik van anticonceptiva. In Zuid-Afrika werd interactief straattheater gebruikt om het bewustzijn te vergroten over gezondheidsoorzaken zoals AIDS of HIV en hoe bepaald gedrag de toename van het virus bevorderen. <\/p>\n

Absurd theater<\/h3>\n

Het theaterstuk \u2018E h\u00f2mber ku a bira kach\u00f3\u2019 werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1957. Een stuk dat sociale onrechtvaardigheid aan de kaak stelt, met name de ontmenselijking van het menselijk wezen om een waardig bestaan te kunnen leven. In 1956, te midden van een klimaat van politiek geweld en onderdrukking in Argentini\u00eb, sloot Osvaldo Drag\u00fan zich aan bij de onafhankelijke theatergroep Fray Mocho en schreef zijn \u2018Historias para ser contadas\u2019 (verhalen om verteld te worden). Het verhaal van de man die een hond werd, maakte deel uit van deze verzameling korte werken. Alle verhalen en stukken van Osvaldo Drag\u00fan, hebben ontmenselijking als belangrijkste thema. <\/p>\n

Toneelschrijver Osvaldo Drag\u00fan<\/h3>\n

\"\"Osvaldo Drag\u00fan werd geboren in 1929 in San Salvador \u201cEntre Rios\u201d op het platteland van Argentini\u00eb in een Joodse familie. Zijn vader was paardentrainer en was trots op zijn werk. Toen stortte de Argentijnse economie in, en moest de familie naar de stad te verhuizen, waar de vader van Osvaldo zich moest vernederen en alleen maar slecht betaalde baantjes kon vinden, zodat het gezin kon overleven. Osvaldo kreeg toen al een besef van het onrecht in de wereld. Hij wilde rechten studeren, maar raakte gehecht aan het theater en de overtuigingskracht van toneelstukken op mensen. Drag\u00fan werd toen toneelschrijver en wijdde zijn leven aan het theater om sociale kwesties te belichten en het publiek met het absurde onrecht van de Argentijnse samenleving te confronteren. Met slechts vier acteurs en een extreem klein budget wist hij een inspirerende band met de Argentijnse publiek op te bouwen met zijn straatoptredens en later in het theater.
Osvaldo Drag\u00fan behaalde internationale successen met zijn thema\u2019s die heel universeel bleken te zijn en wereldwijd mensen aanspraken. <\/p>\n

Verhaallijn van de voorstelling<\/h3>\n

This is the story of a nameless man searching for work. An ordinary individual, who after repeated failed attempts to secure a job, finally grows desperate enough to accept anything available. He is offered a position, but is told that the job only becomes available if someone resigns, dies, or retires. Then, the company\u2019s guard dog dies of old age after years of loyal service. A job is now open. The man is told to take the dog\u2019s place. The employer teaches him how to adapt and how to bark and growl. With no other opportunities, the man gradually transforms, begins to eat dog food, shows affection to his wife by licking and gently biting her. Eventually, she becomes pregnant but fears her child will be born a dog. The final image we are left with is of a man who has fully taken on the role of a dog, walking on all fours and barking. He is being treated by everyone around him as a dog, because to himself and to society he is the watchdog. <\/p>\n

Choice of Piece of creator Milushka Birge<\/h3>\n

\"\"Three years ago, Milushka Birge was invited to participate in the Kaya Kaya street festival in Otrobanda with a theatrical piece. After conducting interviews and speaking with neighborhood residents, she gathered enough real-life material to begin writing.
She transformed a small stretch of street into a vibrant scene: a neighborhood shop, a jealous and gossiping neighbor, mischievous young domino-playing drug dealers at the corner of the street, and a love-struck man who regularly brought gifts to a sex worker he adored. All were drawn from real characters of the Ferdinandstraat and Willemstraat, two notorious streets where the festival took place. These were turbulent times marked by visible prostitution and drug activity.
Fast forward to 2022, after the COVID-19 outbreak. The festival returned, and Birge presented The Man Who Became a Dog. <\/p>\n

She had carried the idea since her days at the Utrecht School of the Arts. The play, originally written by Argentinian playwright Osvaldo Drag\u00fan, spoke to her deeply due to its themes of dehumanization and the loss of personal identity.
\u201cI always kept this script close\u201d, she says. \u201cIt reminds me of what people are capable of doing to one another.\u201d
Now, 32 years later, on Cura\u00e7ao, she sees social conditions deteriorating to the point where the play feels less absurd and more like a reflection of reality. Milushka believes it\u2019s crucial this piece holds up a mirror to humanity. Without that, she says, we forget who we are. This is a clear example of theater fulfilling its most vital role. <\/p>\n
