Freedom: For whom? The theater production Free to be Free is coming to Punda this August. <\/p>\n

How free are you to be truly free? The answer to this question is different for everyone. Free to be Free is a theatrical experience that explores freedom and resistance. It will be performed in Cura\u00e7ao from August 20 to 24, 2024. It is produced by Teatro KadaKen in collaboration with Sites of Memory from the Netherlands and the Mongui Maduro Library in Cura\u00e7ao. After successful performances of this Sites of Memory production in Amersfoort, Deventer, Utrecht, and Amsterdam, the partners and creators have further developed the piece to center Cura\u00e7aoan stories. In addition, a theatrical conversation program will be organized on August 25 at the Mongui Maduro Library, where makers and historians will talk and share scenes from the performance. <\/p>\n

Free to be Free is a location-based performance. The audience is guided through stories and places connected to the colonial past in Punda. With dance, theater, poetry, and music, lesser-known histories are brought to life. We follow a theatrical route that begins in the Fort Church (Fortkerk), where the creators examine the role of institutions in colonial and slavery histories. From there, the route moves through the Hof van Justitie (Court of Justice), ending at a site where interaction with nature and the open sea becomes central. <\/p>\n

Free to be Free was specially developed as part of the commemorations marking the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands and its (former) colonies in 1863\/1873. The effects of this past are still deeply felt by many today. Institutional racism continues to affect people\u2019s daily lives. The process of healing and conversations about reparations remain unfinished.
As long as racism and exclusion rooted in colonial thinking and slavery\u2019s legacy are not structurally addressed, the question remains deeply relevant: Freedom for whom? What have freedom fighters from the past lleft us? And what about those advocating for freedom today? What do we understand about oppression, and about resisting it? <\/p>\n

Over Teatro KadaKen<\/h2>\n

Teatro KadaKen maakt sinds 2009 theatervoorstellingen die gaan over jongeren in de Cara\u00efbische samenleving en hun positie ten aanzien van relevante maatschappelijke issues. We brengen theater waarin inclusie en representatie cruciale kernwaarden zijn: we sluiten niemand uit en willen dat het publiek zich herkent in de verhalen die wij brengen. Dat is belangrijk, want het eiland kent door eeuwen migratiegeschiedenis een zeer rijke etnische diversiteit, en wordt door het koloniale verleden gekenmerkt door patronen van sociale uitsluiting en de sporen daarvan, ook nog vandaag. Kadaken beheert sinds enkele jaren de monumentale theaterzaal AULA, en heeft in 2024 een meerjarensubsidie toegekend gekregen van Fonds Podiumkunsten, waarmee zij in 2025-2028 vier grote producties rond het thema vrijheid zal ontwikkelen. <\/p>\n

Over Mongui Maduro Bibliotheek<\/h2>\n

Mongui Maduro Bibliotheek is een private organisatie opgericht in 1969 voor de bescherming, voortzetting en benutting van de collectie boeken, tijdschriften, knipsels en andere gedrukte bronnen verzameld door de naamgever van de bibliotheek. De bibliotheekcollectie is later uitgebreid met het beheer van enkele archiefcollecties, persoonlijke collecties en met moderne informatiedragers. Met haar collecties Antillana en Judaica is de bibliotheek een belangrijk baken voor onderzoek gericht op culturele, sociale en culturele thema\u2019s met betrekking tot Cura\u00e7ao en de Nederlandse Cariben. Als kenniscentrum heeft de bibliotheek een actieve rol in culturele en wetenschappelijke projecten gericht op het ontdekken, verdiepen en verspreiden van nieuwe of onderbelichte historische narratieven en perspectieven. <\/p>\n

Over Sites of Memory<\/h2>\n

Sites of Memory maakt sinds 2016 locatievoorstellingen over de vaak nog onderbelichte verhalen uit de koloniale geschiedenis en het slavernijverleden. Met veel succes brengen multidisciplinaire makers deze verhalen op een toegankelijke manier onder de aandacht van het publiek in verschillende Nederlandse steden en daarbuiten. Sites of Memory brengt in haar producties nieuwe verhalen naar het publiek en hecht veel belang aan de duurzame borging hiervan door documentatie en verspreiding via haar website. Ook Sites of Memory heeft \u2013 net als KadaKen \u2013 een meerjarensubsidie van Fonds Podiumkunsten ontvangen voor de voortzetting van haar werk in de periode 2025-2028. <\/p>\n

Free to be Free is een locatievoorstelling waarin het publiek wordt meegenomen langs verhalen en plekken die verbonden zijn aan de koloniale geschiedenis van Punda. Met dans, theater, po\u00ebzie en muziek komen onbekende verhalen tot leven. De theatrale route begint in de Fortkerk, waar de makers de rol van instituten in het koloniale- en slavernijverleden onderzoeken. <\/p>\n
